Abstract
This study assesses the implementation of the curriculum in secondary schools in Gwale Local Government, Kano State, focusing on the extent of its implementation, the challenges faced, and the effectiveness of the curriculum in achieving its intended educational goals. The study adopts a descriptive survey research design, allowing for an in-depth analysis of curriculum implementation through data collection from key stakeholders, including teachers, school administrators, and education officials. The population of this study is 350. A sample of 30 teachers from five secondary schools and 10 education officials was selected using simple random and purposive sampling techniques. Questionnaires were used as the primary data collection instrument, designed to assess teachers’ knowledge of the curriculum, the level of adherence to its implementation, availability of teaching resources, and major challenges encountered the process. The findings reveal the curriculum has been partially implemented, several challenges hinder its effectiveness. Include inadequate teacher training, insufficient instructional materials, poor infrastructure, and lack of continuous monitoring and evaluation by relevant authorities. Furthermore, findings indicate that teachers struggle with adapting to the new curriculum structure due to limited professional development opportunities. Despite these challenges, teachers and administrators acknowledge the curriculum’s potential in improving students’ academic performance if properly implemented with adequate support. Based on the findings, the study recommends improved teacher training programs, increased government funding education, provision of adequate instructional materials, and strengthened curriculum monitoring mechanisms. These measures are crucial for ensuring the effective implementation of the 9-Year Basic Education Curriculum in secondary schools within Gwale Local Government, State, and beyond. This study contributes to the broader discussion on education reform in Nigeria, providing empirical insights into curriculum implementation and the factors that influence its success. The findings will be valuable for educators, policymakers, curriculum developers, and education administrators, as they work towards improving the quality of education and addressing the challenges of curriculum implementation in Nigerian secondary schools.
