Abstract
ABSTRACT This study, titled “The Influence of Society on English Students’ Performance in Government Colleges of Education in Anambra State”, examines how societal factors affect the academic achievement of English language students. The research addresses the issue of inadequate availability of qualified English teachers and explores broader societal influences on student performance. Guided by four research purposes and questions, the study adopted a survey research design. The population comprised 350 graduates of English and Literary Studies from Nwafor Orizu College of Education, Nsugbe, and Federal College of Education, Umunze. Using purposive sampling, 200 respondents were selected. Data were collected using a structured questionnaire, validated by experts in English studies and educational measurement. Descriptive statistics (mean) were employed for data analysis. Findings revealed that societal factors—such as family background, peer influence, and community attitudes—significantly impact students’ performance in English. The study concludes that societal influence plays a crucial role in shaping English students’ academic outcomes in government colleges of education, underscoring the need for targeted interventions that consider social contexts in educational planning.
