Perceived Effect of Stress on the Work Behavior Among Nurses in Uniosun Teaching Hospital

Abstract
ABSTRACT Background: Nursing is a demanding profession that often exposes healthcare providers to high levels of stress. The impact of stress on nurses' work behavior has been a topic of concern in recent years. Understanding the perceived effect of stress on the work behavior of nurses is crucial for improving their well-being and the quality of patient care. Aim and Objectives: The aim of this study is to assess the perceived effect of stress on the work behavior of nurses in Uniosun Teaching Hospital. Methodology: This study adopted a quantitative research design. A total of one hundred and eighty-five (185) structured questionnaire was administered to the selected nurses working at Uniosun Teaching Hospital. The study employed a probability sampling technique, which is simple random sampling to select the study participants. The questionnaire consists of validated scales to measure stress levels, work behavior, job satisfaction, and coping mechanisms. Data collected was analyzed using statistical software, employing descriptive statistics analysis to determine the relationships between variables. Results: The results of this study revealed, 70.5% of respondents believed high stress levels cause nurse burnout, with 94.3% supporting stress management education. 90.3% recognized stress's impact on patient care quality. 90.9% of nurses linked stress to fatigue, 82.4% noted eating habit changes due to stress, and 75% reported sleep troubles. 66.5% acknowledged emotional reactions to stress. Additionally, 86.9% cited heavy workloads and long hours, and 83% pointed to lack of work control as stress contributors among nurses. Conclusion: In conclusion, this study highlights the need for interventions to address the perceived effect of stress on nurses' work behavior in UNIOSUN Teaching Hospital. By implementing strategies to reduce stress levels and enhance support systems, healthcare organizations can promote positive work behavior among nurses, ultimately improving patient outcomes and overall healthcare quality.
