Abstract
ABSTRACT In today 's digital emvironment, securing user identities and protecting sensitive data is more critical than ever. A multifactor authentication (MFA) system is a robust security mechanism designed to authenticate users through multiple verification methods, typically incorporating at least thvo of the following factors: something the user knows (password or PIN), something the user has (smartphone, security token), and something the user is (biometric verification, such as fingerprint or facial recognition). This layered approach significantly reduces the risk of unauthorized access, as it requires more than a single compromised factor to breach the system. This paper presents a comprehensive overview of MFA, its architectures, and its application across various platforms and industries. We examine the effectiveness of MFA in mitigating common cyber threats, such as phishing, credential stuffing, and brute-force attacks, while exploring challenges related to usability, deployment costs, and potential security vulnerabilities. By leveraging case studies and real-world implementations, this research underscores the critical role of MEA in enhancing cybersecurity and provides adaptive insights into future developments in authentication technologies, such authentication and zero-trust models.
