Abstract
ABSTRACT Borassus aethiopum, commonly known as the African fan palm or Palmyra palm, is a multipurpose tree widely distributed across tropical Africa. While the tree is renowned for its fruits, leaves, and timber, its seeds remain underexplored despite their significant cultural, nutritional, and economic potentials. The phytochemical analysis revealed the presence of an array of phytochemicals such as alkaloids, flavonoids, tannins, saponins, phenolics. Terpenoids, steroids, glycosides and anthraquinone in the methanol extract, aqueous extract contained all the phytochemical presents in the methanol extract except terpenoid, steroid, glycosides and anthraquinone while the chloroform extract contained only phenolics and steroids. The findings support the use of alcohols as suitable solvent for the extraction of the phytochemicals in Borassus aethiopum seed. Quantification of the extracts revealed total phenolics as 210, 120 and 76( mg GAE/g) for methanol, aqueous and chloroform extracts respectively, and total flavonoids 85mg QE/g and 64 mgQE/g for methanol and aqueous extracts respectively.
