Determination of Tannin and Alkaloid Contents in Ethanolic Extract of Leaf and Stem Bark of Magnifera Idica

Abstract

This project aimed to investigate the composition and concentration of tannin and alkaloids in ethanolic extract of dried leave and barks from mango tree. The mango leaves and mango barks were obtained from a mango tree in Ambrose Alli University, Ekpoma, Esan West Local Government Area of Edo State. The mango leaves and bark were separated from the trunk, after drying, the leaves and barks were grinded to fine powder, 50g of grinded leaves and barks were weighed into two beakers and extracted with200ml of water. The mixtures were left to soak for about 48 hours, after which it was settled, the settled part was spread on a tray for it to dry off, after drying it was scrapped outand used for the analysis. The alkaloids contents in dried leaves were 2.763±0.024mg/g, and barks 2.739±0.008mg/g while for tannin contents in dried leaves are 4.894±0.181mg/g and barks 5.385±0.096mg/g, ethanol. The result reveal that alkaloid content in ethanolic extract of mango leaf was not significantly higher or lower than ethanolic extract of mango stem bark while tannin content was significantly higher in ethanolic extract of mango bark than in ethanolic extract of mango leaf.
