Abstract
Asphalt concrete which consists of coarse aggregate, fine aggregate, filler, and asphalt cement (used as a binder) mixed together in proportion according to a specification is an important composite material for road construction. In this study, the effect of using limestone dust as filler when compared to granite dust was investigated. Sixteen (16) specimens of asphalt mixtures made with limestone and granite filler (control) were produced, and the optimum bitumen content (O.B.C) based on 5.0%, 5.5%, 6.0% and 6.5% bitumen content was determined. Afterward mechanical properties such as Marshall stability, flow, and stiffness was determined. The results show that 6.0% was the optimum bitumen content (O.B.C) for the control and limestone filler. Moreover, the Marshall stability of limestone was 3.87KN higher than that of the control, while the flow and stiffness was 1.83mm and 2.37KN/mm for the limestone and granite dust. In conclusion, mix with limestone dust performs better than mix with granite dust in terms of stability.
