Abstract
Heavy metals are metallic elements with relatively high density and are toxic to the environment. The presence of these heavy metals in the soil can have detrimental effects on agricultural productivity and hence pose great risks to the health of humans through contamination of the food chain. This study was conducted to determine the levels of heavy metals from four farmlands in Samaru and Zango respectively. A total of eight samples were analysed for the presence of Cu and Pb concentrations in mg/kg at the Multiuser Laboratory, Chemistry department, Ahmadu Bello University, Zaria using Atomic Absorption Spectrophotometer (AAS). The mean levels obtained in the samples were 2.80+0.79 and 2.27+0.13 for Cu in Samaru and Zango respectively and 18.0+1.90 and 17.84+2.54 for Pb in Samaru and Zango. The concentrations of Cu and Pb were found to be below the FAO/WHO (2011) standard, which shows poses no immediate concern. In conclusion, regular monitoring of heavy metals and awareness campaigns on the effects of these heavy metals should be conducted.
