Public Perception of the Influence of Jungle Justice on the Criminal Justice System Among Awka South Residents

Abstract
ABSTRACT 9 The study examines the public perception of the influence of jungle justice on the criminal justice system among Awka South residents. The study adopted three research questions and three research. The specif objectives, focusing on appraise the root causes of jungle justice among Awka South residents of Anambra State, to determine the impact of the criminal justice system among Awka South residents of Anambra State, to determine the consequences of jungle justice on the criminal justice system Awka South residents of Anambra State. The population of the study was 270,300 while the sample size was 398 using Taro Yamane formula. The sampling technique used for this research work is stratified random sampling technique and the findings of the study revealed that the root cause of jungle justice among Awka South residents are anger, frustration and lack of trust in the police. In addition, the study also revealed that the major consequences of jungle justice on the criminal justice system in Awka South is that it can deteriorate the country's existing legal system. The study recommends that the judicial system should be more strict to all criminals, the police should be more quick and responsive to crime when they are being called in order to avoid citizens engaging in jungle justice. In addition, there is the need to spread an awareness of human rights to the citizenry. Jungle justice not only violates one‟s right to fair trial but the right to be held innocent until proven guilty. People should be taught about these rights.
