Abstract
The photocatalytic reduction of Cd2+, Pb2 +and Cr6+ ions in aqueous solution was investigated in this study. The photocatalytic utilized was nano-titanium dioxide, composed of 80% anatase and 20% rutile, the UV light source was 15W UV bulb with wavelength of 25nm. The result obtained indicate a reduction efficiency order as follows Cd2+ > Pb2+> Cr6+. It was observed that this result correlate with the respective reduction potentials of the metals ions. The effect of pH on photocatalytic reduction of metal was also carried out, where higher percentage removal of Cd2+ and Pb2+ ions from their aqueous solution was recorded at alkaline pH than at acidic pH. The higher removal Cd2+and Pb2+ ions was attributed to an extensive formation of precipitate at alkaline pH. Therefore, the result of this study will be useful in metal ion removal from industrial waste water using photocatalytic process.
