Abstract
ABSTRACT This study presents the synthesis and characterization of a Nickel-Melamine Metal-Organic Framework (MOF) using a mechanochemical method, a solvent-free technique that promotes chemical reactions through mechanical energy. The synthesis involved the precise weighing of Nickel (II) chloride and melamine in a 1:1 molar ratio, followed by grinding under ambient conditions to facilitate the formation of the Ni-Melamine MOF. The resultant powder was characterized using Fourier Transform Infrared Spectroscopy (FTIR), X-ray Diffraction (XRD), and Scanning Electron Microscopy (SEM) to assess its structural, thermal, and morphological properties. The FTIR spectra of the Ni-Melamine MOF revealed the presence of hydroxyl (-OH) groups, amine (N-H) stretching, and carbonyl (C=O) vibrations, indicating successful incorporation of nickel into the melamine framework. The spectra also showed shifts in aromatic C=C vibrations, suggesting changes in the electronic environment due to nickel coordination. SEM images of the Ni-Melamine MOF exhibited a porous and rough surface structure compared to the smooth, crystalline morphology of pure melamine. This change in morphology is attributed to the formation of metal-ligand bonds, which alter the packing efficiency of the melamine molecules. The XRD patterns of the Ni-Melamine MOF showed distinct peaks at lower 2θ values compared to melamine, indicating changes in interplanar spacing due to nickel incorporation. The absence of higher-angle peaks in the Ni-Melamine MOF suggests reduced crystallinity or altered packing arrangements. The results confirm the successful synthesis of the Ni-Melamine MOF, demonstrating significant structural and morphological changes due to nickel coordination. The study highlights the potential of mechanochemical methods for the synthesis of MOFs and their applications in catalysis and adsorption. Future research could explore the optimization of synthesis conditions and the investigation of the MOF's catalytic and adsorption properties.
