Abstract
ABSTRACT This study focused on “Influence of social media on professional competence of secretarial practitioners in public universities”. Case study of Federal University of Health Sciences, Ila-Orangun, Osun State. Descriptive survey research design was used for the study. The population for the study comprised fifty-one (51) secretarial practitioners from the case study. No sample was made because of the manageable size of the population. Three (3) research questions guided the study: (1) To what extent does the utilization of Whatsapp influence meeting management duties of secretarial practitioners in public universities? (2) To what extent does the utilization of Facebook influence correspondence duties of secretarial practitioners in public universities? (3) To what extent does the utilization of Twitter influence information processing duties of secretarial practitioners in public universities? Questionnaire was used as the instrument for data collection from the respondents. Data collected was analysed using simple mean method. Based on the findings, it was concluded that using Facebook, Whatsapp, Twitter, and other social media applications in the office increase secretaries’ job performance. The study therefore recommended that secretaries should create a balance between social media chats and office activities, rather more attention should be directed to office tasks in public institutions.
