Abstract
Northwestern part of Ekong and its environs is located in Oban massif crystalline basement rock complex of Nigeria, located between longitudes 80 31’ 0” and 80 35’ E of the Greenwich meridian and located between longitude 50 16’ 0” 50 21’ 0” N of the equator. The area is dominated by gneisses and schists which are intruded by igneous rocks (granite, granodiorite, pegmatites and quartz veins). Field studies show that the gneisses and schists are highly foliated, jointed and fractured. Petrographic analysis revealed that the biotite gneisses are coarse grained and composed biotite, quartz, plagioclase, muscovite, orthoclase and hornblende. Biottite schists are composed of quartz, plagioclase, muscovite, biotite and hornblende. The granites are coarse to medium grained and consists of muscovite, quartz and biotite plagioclase, with the predominance of quartz. Granite pegmatite contain coarse grain minerals of quartz and biotite. Structural analysis using rose diagrams reveal that basement complex had undergone polyphase tectonism and metamorphism. The Pan-African Orogeny is the latest episode which left imprint of NE-SW, E-W fracture trend and N-S foliation trend on the rocks. The relics of the previous enriched with industrial and construction materials.
