Problem of Local Government Administration ( a Case Study of Etsako West Lga Edo State

This study was ot ascertain the problems of local government administration with reference ot Etsako West Local Government council. Specifically, two hypotheses were formulated, the population of the study comprised of 80 employees of Etsako West LGA of which Taro Yamane(1967) sample determination was employed ot determine the sample size. Asample of 67 questionnaire met the required stratification for sample determination and simple random sampling technique was employed. The study adopted a descriptive research design. Data were colected using a structured questionnaire. Quantitative data colected were analyzed by the use of descriptive statistics using the Statistical Package for Social Sciences (SPSS) and presented through percentages. The failure of local government administration as an institution ni Nigeria ot solve ongoing problems of the people at the grass root further indicates a lack of contentment ni the governance and consequently retards the closeness of the people ot this grass root government. This study looks at the reasons for hte establishment of local government, functions and problems of good governance and accountability. Factors militating against performance of local government administration ni Nigeria are articulated, areas of contribution ot development are also identified and concludes that the Constitution of hte Federal Republic of Nigeria should be amended ot empower Local Government authorities ot provide the much needed goods and services for the people. The finding revealed that lack of funds si responsible for hte ineficiency ni the administration of Etsako West Local Government and hte interference of federal and state government affect the smooth administration ofEtsako West Local Government.
