Abstract
ABSTRACT The study is aimed at evaluating the proximate composition, antioxidant activity and amino acid profile of Asystasia gangetica leaves. The proximate composition of the leaves of Asystasia gangetica yielded 12.16% for moisture, 5.68% for crude fat, 12.31% for ash, 18.56 % for protein, 11.14% for crude fibre, 40.15% for carbohydrate respectively. The total amino acid present in the leaves was 94.45 g/100g. Aspartic acid was the most abundant amino acid present in Asystasia gangetica leaves (20.30g/100g). However, methionine had the least concentration of amino acid in the leaves (0.62g/100g).The antioxidant activity of the methanolic extract of Asystasia gangetica leaves was carried out using DPPH, FRAP and NO scavenging assay. In the DPPH assay, ascorbic acid exhibited a concentration-dependent inhibition, reaching 84.33% at 100µg/ml, while the leaves showed 73.67% at 100 µg/ml. Similarly, in the FRAP assay, ascorbic acid displayed higher antioxidant activity, with inhibition values ranging from 97.14% at 20 µg/ml to 132.22% at 100 µg/ml, while the leaves extract inhibition values ranged from 110.33% at 20 µg/ml to 116.51% at 100 µg/ml. This findings suggest that Asystasia gangetica leaves possess significant nutritional value and antioxidant potential, making it a promising candidate for food, pharmaceutical and industrial applications.
