Abstract
This study analyzes the parenting practices portrayed in Chimamanda Adichie’s Purple Hibiscus. The objectives of this study were to determine the impact of parenting on children in their developmental abilities and eventually the course of their lives, the various ways parenting influences their development such as language and communication, mental processes and cognitive abilities, self restraints, peer relations, academic achievement and psychological heath. The data was analyzed using questionaires. The findings revealed that 36.8% of these respondents came from an authoritarian family while 42.1% of these respondents came from an authoritative home. The authoritarian style of parenting causes more harm to the development of the child's cognitive, mental, physical, emotional, abilities as seen in Purple Hibiscus in the case of Kambili and her brother Jaja. The study concludes that the authoritative style of parenting remains the best in child upbringing as it provides children conducive environment for a healthy growth.
