Abstract
ABSTRACT This study investigates the influence of TikTok on drug abuse among youths in Anyigba, Dekina Local Government Area, Kogi State, Nigeria. The research aims to assess the extent of exposure to drug-related content on TikTok, identify the role of social media influencers in shaping perceptions and behaviors related to drug abuse, and explore youth participation in challenges that promote drug use. Grounded in Social Learning Theory and Media Effects Theory, the study focuses on a population of 21,878 youths, with a sample size of 377. The findings reveal that 49.0% of respondents have been exposed to drug-related content on TikTok, with 15.6% encountering such content frequently. This exposure aligns with existing research, indicating that social media platforms like TikTok are becoming significant avenues for normalizing drug use among young people. Additionally, 39.0% of respondents believe their exposure on TikTok is comparable to other platforms, underscoring the pervasive nature of drug-related content across social media. The study highlights the critical role TikTok plays in shaping youth perceptions and behaviors concerning drug abuse, raising concerns about the potential normalization of risky behaviors through such content.
