Abstract
ABSTRACT The study investigated the influence of personal variables on the participation in skills oriented activities among Human Kinetics and Health Education students at the University of Calabar. Four specific objectives guided the study, from which five research questions were posed and later converted into five corresponding hypotheses. The study was grounded theoretically. The descriptive survey research design was adopted for the study. The population of the study comprised 368 undergraduates of Human Kinetics and Health Education Department at the University of Calabar. The entire population of the study was enumerated for this study using a census approach. A questionnaire, developed by the researcher and entitled “Personal Variables and Participation in Skills-oriented Activities Questionnaire (PVPSOAQ) was used for data collection. The instrument was duly validated by experts. Independent t-test and Pearson Product Moment Correlation Statistical tools were employed for data analysis. Finding revealed that gender, interest, marital status and career goals significantly influences students’ participation in skill-oriented activities respectively. It was recommended among others, that gender disparity in participation should be address; students should be motivated in taking interest in sports, they should provide flexible participation options to accommodate students’ diverse. Life circumstances for married students needs and align skills-oriented activities with students’ career pathways within Human Kinetics and Health Education
