Effect of Class Size on Teaching and Learning of Chemistry in Gwale Secondary School, Kano-Nigeria

Abstract
ABSTRACT The research work was conducted to Investigate The effect of class size on Teaching and Learning of Chemistry in Gwale Secondary School, Kano - Nigeria. Four objectives were raised, four research questions was answered. The instrument of data collection was a structured questionnaire”. A sample of 252 respondents was selected using the Krehcie& Morgan (1970) table of sample size. The research design used for this research work is descriptive survey. Twolecturers from Yusuf MaitamaSule University, Kano validated the instrument. The reliability of the instrument was discovered to be 0.84 using test-retest method, the data was analyzed using percentages. The study findings real that; lack adequate infrastructure, facilities (classrooms and laboratory), insufficient funding for education resources, inadequate planning and management of education, large class sizes hinders students ability in teaching and learning of chemistry. Therefore the study recommends that; There should be teacher development and training on classroom management techniques tailored for large classes and contribute to improving that quality of chemistry education in secondary school. The school should organize peer tutoring sessions or study group among student which can assist addressing limitation of large class size in teaching and learning chemistry Government and authority should build well ventilated classes. Moreso, there should be adequate resource material and infrastructure.
