Abstract
This study investigates the impact of poverty on the academic performance of Social Studies students in selected junior secondary schools within Anka Local Government, Zamfara State. Through a structured survey involving 100 students, the research explores various dimensions of how socio-economic challenges affect educational performances, including access to school materials, regular attendance, concentration in class, and overall performance. The findings reveal a significant prevalence of financial constraints, with a majority of students indicating difficulties in acquiring essential educational resources. Additionally, the study highlights a shortage of qualified Social Studies teachers and inadequate instructional materials as critical barriers to effective learning. A notable percentage of students acknowledged that, poverty adversely impacts their academic performance and concentration levels in Social Studies classes. Based on these findings, the study recommends targeted interventions, including financial support for disadvantaged students, enhanced teacher training, improved access to instructional resources, and community engagement initiatives. These measures aim to address the challenges posed by poverty and foster an equitable learning environment that promotes academic success for all students.
