Abstract
ABSTRACT Typhoid and malaria co-infection is a major public health problem in many developing countries. The prevalence of these diseases among the students of Federal University of Technology, Akure, Ondo State was studied from April to September, 2024. Two hundred (200) students (95 males and 105 females) whose ages range from 15-30 years were selected at random for this study. The blood samples collected from students were examined for malaria parasite and typhoid fever using field staining technique and Widal agglutination kit respectively. The result showed that 121 (60.5%) tested positive for malaria parasite, 81 (40.5%) tested positive for typhoid fever and 45 (22.5%) had malaria and typhoid fever co-infection. The co-infection of malaria and typhoid infections was higher in females (23.8%) than in males (21.1%). The highest prevalence of malaria (63.3%) was observed in age group 21-25 years while (58.1%) prevalence was observed in age-group 15-20 years. Co-infection of malaria and typhoid fever was higher in age-group 21-25 years (26.6%) than the other age-groups. The prevalence of both infections in the study area calls for prompt treatments of both diseases to suppress the diseases in the areas.
