Abstract
ABSTRACT This study examined anxiety and it's impact on the academic performance of undergraduates in Ekiti State University. The study explored key aspects such as causes of anxiety, impact of anxiety on academic performance, and coping mechanisms. The study adopted a descriptive survey research design, using a structured questionnaire to collect data from 120 randomly selected undergraduate students from various departments and faculties in Ekiti State University .The findings of the study revealed that academic pressure, financial stress, and family expectations are the primary contributors to anxiety among undergraduates, with academic pressure being the most significant. Additionally, the study established that anxiety negatively affects academic performance by impairing cognitive functions such as concentration, memory retention, and decision-making. Furthermore, the results indicated that social relationships play a vital role in mitigating anxiety, as students with strong peer networks reported lower anxiety levels and better academic outcomes. Study habits, socio-economic status, and participation in study groups were also found to be significant determinants of academic success. Based on these findings, the study recommends that students adopt effective study habits, time management strategies, and utilize available campus counseling services to manage anxiety. Parents should foster open communication and monitor the academic pressure placed on their children, while universities should promote social interactions through extracurricular activities and group study sessions. Additionally, financial aid programs and academic support services should be enhanced to reduce financial stress and improve students' learning experiences.
