Challenges and Prospects of Private Media Ownership on News Dissemination

Abstract
ABSTRACT This study delved into the challenges and prospects of private media ownership on news dissemination, case study of Television Continental. Adopting Gatekeeping and Agenda settings theories, the study found that the private media ownership faces some challenges and prospects in dissemination of their news content or outlet as it may be. It was found that Television Continental will assist regulatory organizations like the National Broadcasting Commission (NBC), the Broadcast Society of Nigeria and other media regulatory authorities in focusing and proffering solutions to the challenges facing the private ownership broadcast media system. A qualitative research methodology was adopted for the study. The population for this study comprised 32 staffs of the Television Continental station. The study recommends among others staff, that accounts should be engaged for balance, objective and authentic on news dissemination without any hindrance, so as to keep the general public abreast of credible information.
