Evaluation of Students Vocabulary Development in Junior Secondary Schools in Uhun Mwode Local Government Area of Edo State

Abstract
The study examined the Student Vocabulary Development in Junior Secondary School in Uhunwonde Local Government Area, Edo State. Four research questions were raised to guide this study. The study adopted the descriptive survey research design. The population of the study comprised of 150 Junior Secondary School Students in Uhunwonde Local Government Area, Edo State. The instrument used for data collection is a self-structured questionnaire. This instrument was validated by the project supervisor in the Department of Educational Foundations, Faculty of Education, University of Benin. The data gathered was analysed using mean score and standard deviation. A Cronbach's Alpha was used on one fifty (150) students in public junior secondary schools in Uhunwonde Local Government Area who were not part of the sample. Test and retest reliability was used on ascertain the reliability of the instrument and coefficient result of 0.712 was established. From the findings, the study revealed that independent reading outside of school positively influences students' vocabulary development, as students actively engage in reading books or articles. The Recommendation suggest that Students should be encouraged to engage more in independent reading outside the classroom, as this has shown to contribute positively to their vocabulary development. They should explore diverse reading materials, including books, articles, and digital resources to expand their vocabulary further.
