Abstract
ABSTRACT This study evaluated the antidiabetic potential and lipid peroxidation effect of encapsulated avocado (Persea americana) seed extract using an in vitro yeast cell model at varying glucose concentrations (5 mM, 10 mM, and 25 mM). The glucose uptake efficiency of the extract was compared to that of metformin, a standard antidiabetic drug. Results showed that the extract enhanced glucose uptake in a dose-dependent manner, with the highest activity recorded at 500 μg/ml across all glucose levels. Although the extract was less potent than metformin, its glucose uptake capacity remained significant, particularly at lower glucose concentrations. The antioxidant potential of avocado (Persea americana) seed extract was investigated using the inhibition of lipid peroxidation assay at varying concentrations (62.5–500 μg/ml), with ascorbic acid serving as a standard. The results revealed a concentration-dependent inhibition of lipid peroxidation by both avocado seed extract and ascorbic acid. At 500 μg/ml, avocado seed extract exhibited 62.90 ± 0.95% inhibition, while ascorbic acid showed significantly higher inhibition at 87.37 ± 0.29%.The avocado seed extract showed significant antioxidant activity, supporting its potential use in managing oxidative stress associated with diabetes. These findings suggest that encapsulated avocado seed possesses promising antidiabetic properties Further in vivo and clinical studies are recommended to validate its efficacy and safety.
