Assessing the Role of Tourism in Poverty Alleviation: a Study of Gamji Park and the Environment Kaduna Metropolis, Nigeria

Abstract
This research aims to assess the role of tourism in poverty alleviation in Gamji Park and its surrounding environment in Kaduna State, Nigeria. The study explores the link between tourism and poverty alleviation, highlighting tourism's potentials to enhance economic growth and reduce poverty in the region. A mixed-methods approach was adopted, combining quantitative and qualitative data collection approach. Questionnaires and interviews were employed to elicit data from the respondents. A total of 147 questionnaires distributed and 144 were executed and analyze. Purposive random sampling which ensured representative data collection was adopted to determine the sample size and descriptive statistics were used for analysis. Findings revealed that 54% of respondents identified agriculture and support programs, 28% identified small business grants, and 17% identified skills acquisition programs as the poverty alleviation activities in the park. Regarding the underutilized economic activities, 40% of respondents pointed to handicrafts, indicating significant unutilized potential, alongside 33% citing hotels and 15% mentioning restaurants. Tourism was found to have significantly contributed to the local economy by generating income through visitors spending and creating employment opportunities across sectors, including hospitality, transportation, and handicrafts. Additionally, 38% of respondents noted tourism improved local infrastructure, 35% emphasized cultural exchange, and 30% highlighted increased job opportunities.
