Sports as an Instrument for Promoting Peace Among Students of Ahmadu Bello University, Zaria

Abstract

The purpose of the study was to find out the role of sport as an instrument for promoting peace among undergraduate students in Ahmadu Bello University, Zaria. The researcher adopted survey research design and draw a sample of 385 from the total population of 37,312 students using Multi stage sampling procedure. All the 385 questionnaire distributed were returned upon which the data analysis was conducted. The research findings, shows that sport is an instrument for promoting peace and unity among students in Ahmadu Bello University, 216(56%) that sport is a remedy to youth restiveness, 210(55%) is also medium to resolving conflict and riots among students, 266(69%) also sport bring inter-communal relationship, and finally 260(68%) breaks barriers caused by enmity among students and individual in Ahmadu Bello University, Zaria. The researcher concluded that sport is really an instrument for promoting peace among students in Ahmadu Bello university. It is therefore recommended that youth should make sure that, they participate in one or the other sport, in order to keep body fitness, and to learn on how to live and maintain a sportsmanship like behavior among each other and Students should also learn to watch intramural recreational games and putting into practice, the need to promote peace.
