Knowledge and Attitude of Secondary School Students on Water Sanitation, Towards the Prevention of Cholera in Oyun Local Government Area

Abstract
ABSTRACT
This study assessed the knowledge and attitude of secondary school students on water sanitation, towards the prevention of cholera in Oyun Local Government Area. The specific purposes examined (i) the level of knowledge among secondary school students in Oyun Local Government Area on water sanitation practices (ii) the attitudes of secondary school students in Oyun Local Government Area toward proper water sanitation practices (iii) the practice of proper water sanitation to prevent the cholera among secondary school students in Oyun Local Government Area.
A descriptive research of the survey type was adopted. The population of the study comprised of all secondary school students in Oyun Local Government Area. Two hundred and fifty (250) respondents were sampled for the study. The instrument used for data collection was a structured questionnaire which was validated by three experts and tested for reliability that yielded a correlation reliability coefficient of 0.81r and consider that the instrument is reliable. Percentage and Chi-square statistics were employed for data analysis at 0.05 level of significance.
The findings of the study were that;
i. secondary school students have significant knowledge of water sanitation to prevent cholera with calc. ᵪ2 value of 177.560> the crit. t-value of 9.488 at @0.05 alpha level.
ii. secondary school students have significant positive attitude toward maintaining proper water sanitation practices to prevent cholera with calc. ᵪ2 value of 132.752> the crit.t- value of 9.488 @0.05 alpha level.
iii. secondary school students have significant practice proper water sanitation to prevent cholera with calc. ᵪ2 value of 320.320> the crit. t-value of 9.488 @0.05 alpha level.
The study concluded that there is high level of knowledge among secondary school students in Oyun Local Government Area on water sanitation practices, also there is positive attitudes among secondary school students in Oyun Local Government Area toward proper water sanitation practices and finally, there is positive practice of proper water sanitation to prevent the cholera among secondary school students in Oyun Local Government Area. It was recommended that Local authorities should strengthen and expand educational programs in schools to reinforce knowledge of sanitation, ensuring it is consistently applied.
