Abstract
ABSTRACT
Xylopia aethiopica and Tetrapleura tetraptura are two tropical plants widely used in traditional medicine in Nigeria. This study aimed to compared the bioactive compounds present in the fruit of both plants. Phytochemical screening revealed that present of alkaloids, flavoniod, phenolics and terpenoids in both fruits. However, the concentration of these compounds differed significantly between the two species. Xylopia aethiopica had higher levels of alkaloids and flavoniods, while Tetrapleura tetraptera had nigher level of phenolics and terpenoids. The antioxidant activity of both fruit was also evaluated, with Tetrapleura tetraptera showing higher antioxidant activity. The result of this study suggest that both Xylopia aethiopica and Tetrapleura tetraptera fruits are rich in bioactive compounds with potential health benefits, but their phytochemical profiles and antioxidant activities differ.
