Abstract
This study examines the contributions of the multi-party system to the political development of Chibok Local Government Area (LGA) in Borno State, Nigeria. Employing a descriptive survey research design, the study integrates quantitative and qualitative methodologies to assess the relationship between multi-party politics and political development in a conflict-affected region. Data were collected from 398 respondents through structured questionnaires, semi-structured interviews, and secondary sources. The findings reveal high awareness (82.9%) and significant participation (69.3%) in the multi-party system, indicating public engagement. The system has positively influenced political representation (65.4%) and accountability (58.2%) but faces challenges in addressing local issues like security and infrastructure (48.6%). Key challenges include electoral violence (60.3%), ethnic and religious manipulation (52.8%), and socio-economic barriers to political participation (45.2%). The study concludes that while the multi-party system promotes inclusivity and democratic practices in Chibok, its potential is undermined by insecurity, systemic inefficiencies, and socio-political manipulation. Recommendations include improving security, fostering grassroots mobilization, and promoting policies tailored to local needs to enhance the system's effectiveness in conflict-affected areas. This research contributes to understanding the dynamics of political development in Nigeria's marginalized regions and highlights the need for targeted interventions to strengthen democratic consolidation. The recommended that The Nigerian government should prioritize the restoration of security in conflict zones like Chibok to ensure peaceful and credible elections. Efforts should be made to establish secure voting environments where citizens can participate without fear of violence or intimidation. Political parties in Chibok should focus on grassroots mobilization to engage marginalized groups, particularly women and youth. Education and awareness campaigns should be implemented to improve political literacy and encourage informed voting. Political parties should work towards fostering collaboration and negotiation to manage ethnic and religious divisions constructively. Political parties should prioritize policies that address the economic needs of the people in Chibok, focusing on rural development, poverty alleviation, education, and healthcare. And Political parties in Chibok and other similar regions should embrace internal democracy to ensure transparency, accountability, and effective leadership selection processes.
