Abstract
ABSTRACT
The objective of this project was to conduct a techno-economic analysis of biogas production for energy at Rivers State University. This study evaluated the economic viability, environmental impact, and implementation feasibility of utilizing biogas as an alternative energy source within the university. Key performance indicators such as Levelized Cost of Energy (LCOE), Payback Period (PBP), Return on Investment (ROI), and Internal Rate of Return (IRR) were used to assess the financial aspects of the project. The results demonstrated an LCOE of 7.64 Naira per Kilowatt-hour, a PBP of 1 year, an ROI of 2486%, and an IRR of 99%, indicating significant economic benefits. Environmental assessments confirmed substantial reductions in greenhouse gas emissions and the generation of valuable digestate for agricultural use. The feasibility study validated the availability of sufficient organic waste and the university's capability to support biogas production. The study concluded that biogas production is a viable and sustainable energy solution for Rivers State University, offering both economic and environmental advantages. Recommendations for further research include optimizing biogas production processes and conducting long-term impact assessments.
