Abstract
ABSTRACT
This study is targeted at assessing the usage of mobile devices among tertiary institutions students in Nigeria using Delta State Polytechnic Ogwashi-uku as it's primary focus. The objectives of the study are to assess the usage patterns of mobile devices among DSPG students, to ascertain the benefits derived in mobile device by tertiary institutions students and to investigate whether students are influenced to engage in any online cyber-crime through which questionnaires was designed for the respondents. The sample size was gotten from the population of the study in such a way that will be representative of ND1, NDII HND I and HND ii in both regular 1 and 2 programme in Delta State Polytechnic Ogwashi-uku. The purposive sampling of non probability sampling techniques was adopted questionnaires was used as instruments for collecting data. Data collected was analyzed by using sample percentage. One hundred and. Twenty (120) copies of the questionnaires were administered but one hundred (100) were returned and found usable which represent 83.3%. findings from the study showed that students of Delta State Polytechnic Ogwashi-uku make use of mobile devices in order to boost their academics performance and that students of Delta State Polytechnic Ogwashi-uku make of mobile devices for research and learning g purposes; thus,make the learning process n Nigerian tertiary institutions easier. However , the use of mobile devices leads to laziness and spies distractions from academic purposes among students of Delta State Polytechnic Ogwashi-uku . Based on the findings of the study, it is therefore, recommended that students should be encouraged and conditioned to use mobile devices for research and learning purposes rather than using it chat, playing games, taking photographs, listening to music and watching videos. The research was anchored on the uses and gratification theory of mass communication.
