Abstract
The main aim of this study was to examine the menace of gully erosion along river Kubanni, determine the causative factors of gully erosion, and the main objectives of the study was to identify the factors responsible for gully formation along river Kubanni, determine the effects of gully erosion along the river Kubanni and to proffer possible solutions to the problems.
For this study, the survey research design was adopted. The choice of the design was informed by the objectives of the study as outlined in chapter one. The survey research design provides a quick, efficient and accurate means of assessing information about a about a population of interest. A total of 180 respondents were selected based on their knowledge of the “Menace of Gully Erosion Along River Kubanni in Zaria Kaduna, Nigeria”.
The study found out that sand quarrying, urban expansion, dry season agriculture, poor drainage and construction of houses around these areas are responsible for causing soil erosion, where most of the respondents where strongly agreed with the options above. Agricultural land uses, Mining land uses and Quarrying land uses are all land uses that causes soil erosion.
The study also found soil erosion leads to the loss of farm land, exposing of the top soil to erosion, collapsing of residential houses, increased pollution and sediments and declines in fish and other aquatic animals, with residential land uses being undecided while the rest were strongly agreed.
Possible solutions were given to mitigate the effects of soil erosion and there are: stop building along flood plains, reclamation of eroded areas and construction of more drainage, while the above were strongly agreed, improvement in modern farming system and control environmental pollution where undecided
