Abstract
Research was carried out to unveil the phytochemical contents of the microgreen and matured leaves bitter leaf using Gas Chromatography and Mass Spectrophotometer method. The results of GC-MS analysis of the samples showed that a total of eighteen phytochemicals are found in the microgreen of bitter leaf with retention time ranging from 2.539 to 13.559 mins a highest percentage yield of 17.03% recorded from Thymol and lowest percentage yield of 0.50% recorded from Eicosylpentafluoropinoate. A total of twenty three phytochemicals are found in the matured bitter leaf with retention time ranging from 2.539 to 14.629 mins a highest percentage yield of 16.75% recorded from Thymol and lowest percentage yield of 0.22% recorded from tetradecene. The study also revealed that the microgreen and matured bitter leaves contain the following same phytochemicals abut in varied amount Oxo-n-Valeric acid, Butanoic acid, Ethanol, Thymol, Phenol, Caryophyllene, Ethylene glycol and Quinoline. Valeric acid, Butanoic acid, Ethanol, Thymol, Phenol, Caryophyllene, ethylene glycol and quinoline has found wide utilization as ligand molecule in molecular docking with protein target sites for the drug discovery and identification. However, a direct and positive relationship was found to exist between microgreen and matured phytochemicals in bitter leaf.
