Abstract
This study investigated the parental socio-economic background and Academic performance among secondary schools in Gyellesu ward, Zaria Local Government. The study adopted a descriptive research design. The sample size consisted of 150 respondents drawn using a purposive sampling technique. The descriptive statistics was used to analyze the data. Findings revealed a positive relationship between parents’ educational background and students’ academic achievement in secondary school in Gyellesu Ward, Zaria Local Government. Where most students whose parents’ income level is higher perform better in school. The study recommends that communities, government, and non-governmental organizations should always try to improve the income of individuals as it affects the academic performance of their children. Government should consider parent’s income and educational level as a means of improving the inter-generational transmission of socioeconomic status in the study area and the country at large
