Availability and Utilization of Human and Material Resources in Teaching Social Studies at Junior Secondary School Level

Abstract
The study examined the level of availability and utilization of human and material resources in teaching social studies at junior secondary school level in Uyo local government area of Akwa Ibom State. Specifically, the study investigated the level of availability of physical facilities for teaching social studies in junior secondary schools, level of availability of instructional material for teaching social studies in junior secondary Schools, level of utilization of available instructional material for teaching social studies in junior secondary school, level of availability of qualified teachers in the teaching of social studies in junior secondary schools. The study adopted a descriptive survey research design,the sample size of the study were drawn from fourteen public secondary schools in Uyo Educational Committee using simple random sampling technique, the researcher randomly selected 10 public secondary schools in Uyo Local Educational Committee and 10 social studies teachers (one per school) constituted the sample size for the study. A check list titled “AVAILABILITY AND UTILIZATION OF SOCIAL STUDIES MATERIAL RESOURCES”was used to capture data and the data were analysed descriptively. The result of the findings revealed that out of ten sampled schools, only six (60%) schools had computer laboratory which is a necessary facility in teaching social studies. In this digital era, only 2(20%) of the sampled schools have computer sets, on the level of utilization of available instructional materials, most of the sampled schools utilized available instructional materials at their disposal.
