Abstract
This study examines the perceptions and attitudes of Ekiti State University undergraduates towards body image. The research seeks to understand how students view their physical appearance, the factors influencing these perceptions, and how such attitudes affect their self-esteem and social interactions. A descriptive survey research design was adopted, and data were collected from a sample of undergraduate students across various faculties using a structured questionnaire. The findings revealed that while many students expressed satisfaction with their body image, a significant number reported dissatisfaction influenced by social media, peer pressure, and societal beauty standards. Gender differences were observed, with female students showing greater concern about body shape and weight compared to their male counterparts. The study further discovered that negative body image perceptions often lead to low self-esteem, social withdrawal, and in some cases, unhealthy behaviors such as extreme dieting. It was recommended that universities should promote body positivity through counseling programs, awareness campaigns, and the inclusion of wellness education to help students develop healthy attitudes toward their bodies.
