Abstract
Urinary tract infections (UTIs) are among the most common bacterial infections, particularly in young adults, including students. This study investigates the antibacterial susceptibility of bacteria isolated from urine samples of students to determine the prevalence of multidrug-resistant strains. Urine samples were collected, and bacterial isolates were identified using standard microbiological techniques. The most frequently isolated bacterial species included Escherichia coli, Klebsiella pneumoniae, and Staphylococcus aureus. Antibiotic susceptibility testing was conducted using the disk diffusion method against commonly prescribed antibiotics. The results showed varying degrees of resistance, with E. coli exhibiting high resistance to ampicillin and tetracycline, while showing susceptibility to ciprofloxacin and nitrofurantoin. K. pneumoniae demonstrated moderate resistance to cephalosporins, whereas S. aureus displayed significant resistance to penicillin but remained susceptible to vancomycin. It is recommended that students practice proper hygiene, seek medical advice for UTI symptoms, and avoid self-medication to prevent the emergence of drug-resistant bacterial strains. Further research should focus on molecular characterization of resistant strains and the development of alternative treatment options.
