Antimalarial Activity of Andrographis Paniculata and Impact on Homeostasis Model Assessment of Insulin Resistance (homa-Ir)

Abstract
Malaria remains a critical public health challenge, exacerbated by the emergence of drug-resistant strains of Plasmodium. Concurrently, malaria infection has been implicated in disrupting glucose metabolism, contributing to insulin resistance. This study investigates the antimalarial activity of Andrographis paniculata and its impact on insulin resistance, as measured by the Homeostatic Model Assessment of Insulin Resistance (HOMA-IR), using Plasmodium berghei as a model parasite in mice. Results indicated a substantial reduction in parasitamia levels and increased survival rates in treated mice compared with controls. This study highlights Andrographis paniculata as a promising candidate for novel antimalarial therapies, offering benefits that extend beyond parasitic clearance to ameliorating insulin resistance. This observation warrants further investigation
