Abstract
A Schiff-base derived from sulfonamide and salicylaldehyde, and its metal complexes of Cu (II), Co (II) and Ni (II) were prepared and analysed based on their solubility, molar conductance and infrared analyses. The Schiff base in an ethanolic solution was refluxed with the ethanolic solution of the metal in 2:1 molar ratio. Physical and analytical data suggested that the Schiff base act as tetradentate ligand towards the metal ions via azomethine-N. All the complexes have low molar conductance value (3.13-9.9Ω-1cm2 mol-1), indicating that they are non-electrolyte. The prepared ligand and its respective metal complexes were screened for their antibacterial activity against Staphylococcus aureus and Escherichia coli, bacterial strains. The results of these studies revealed that the metal complexes showed significant antibacterial activity at high concentrations.
