Abstract
This study has focused on the hepatotoxic effects of permethrin on the liver of adult male Wistar rats. Forty adult male Wister rats were divided into four groups, of which Group A was exposed to 0.5 mL of normal saline per kg of rat, while Group B was exposed to permethrin orally at a dosage of 1000 mg/kg of feed for four weeks. Group C was administered Nigella sativa oil at dose of 5 mL/kg of rat and Group D was exposed to both permethrin and Nigella sativa oil, given at the same dose as Group B and Group C. The liver was excised for histological and histochemical analysis. Oxidative status and lipid peroxidation were analyzed by determining biomarkers such glutathione peroxidase, superoxide dismutase, and malondialdehyde. The functions of liver enzymes, alanine transferase, aspartate aminotransferase, alkaline phosphatase were also asusessed. These findings have shown that permethrin caused a reduction in body weight and also an increase in liver weight. Keywords: permethrin, hepatotoxicity, liver morphology, oxidative stress
