Abstract
ABSTRACT The present research was carried out to evaluate the analgesic activity of the hydro methanolic stem extract of Costus afer in mice. Intraperitoneal acute toxicity (LDs) test of the extract was carried out. The intraperitoneal LDs0 value was estimated to be greater than 5000 mg/kg in mice, indicating that the stem extract was relatively non toxic. The hydro methanolic stem extract of Costus afer at 250, 500, and 1000 mg/kg body weight produced significant (p < 0.05, p < 0.01) and dose dependent inhibitions of the acetic acid induced abdominal contractions and hot plate test in mice. The result indicates that the hydro methanolic stem extract of Costus afer has analgesic activity and justifies its traditional use in pain management.
