Abstract
The aim of the project is to determine the in vitro Antiplasmodial activity of antimalarial herbal mixture (Agbo), sold in kano state, Nigeria. The 3 plant samples A, B and C were collected from three different locations in kano state and the extraction was carried out in ethanol. The filtered sterilized extracts (10, 5, 2.5, 1.25) mg/ml were tested for antiplamodial activity against Plasmodium parasites. The phytochemical constituents in the potential extracts were also detected. Result: Of the selected plant species or samples, sample the bark of Switenia macrophylla showed an excellent antiplasmodial activity, followed by sample B root of Anisopus manni, while sample C bark of Anageisus leiocarpus revealed significant antiplasmodial activity, between the concentration and time of incubation exposure. The in vitro antiplasmodial activity might be due to the presence of alkaloids, flavanoids, tannins, glycosides, saponins among others in the ethanolic extracts of the tested plant samples. the ethanolic extracts possess lead compounds for development of antiplasmodial drugs.
