Abstract
This project presents an attempt to optimize a shell and tube heat exchanger using the Particle Swarm Optimization (PSO) on the MathLab software. A heat exchanger is a system that is used to transfer heat through two (2) flowing fluids that are of different temperatures. There are different types of heat exchangers used in various industries like the finned tube heat exchanger/ air cooled heat exchanger, shell and tube heat exchanger, plate heat exchanger etc. The shell and tube heat exchanger is probably the most versatile and widely used in most industrial sectors. This project captures the optimization of the total annual operating cost. Thus, an attempt has been made to obtain a set of optimum dimensions of the heat exchanger subject to a given set of inlet and desired outlet conditions. All parameters have been taken from the relevant industry codes and standards, thus making the optimization problem akin to a real-world scenario.
