A Semantic Analysis of English Speaking Nigerian Islamic Preachers on Youtube

Abstract
This study examines the semantic features used by English-speaking Nigerian Islamic preachers on YouTube, focusing on how language is employed by those preachers to convey religious meaning and influence audience understanding. Using a qualitative approach, sermons by Dr. Isa Ali Pantami and Dr. Abdulhakeem Abdullateef were analysed through semantic theory, particularly lexical semantics. The research identifies key semantic strategies such as metaphor, connotation, anaphora, reference, and negation. These features help preachers emphasize moral guidance, spiritual accountability, and the integration of worship into everyday life. Symbolic expressions like "the tree" and personifications such as Iblis as an "advisor" enrich the sermons and make complex theological ideas more accessible. Findings reveal that context plays a vital role in shaping the interpretation of meaning. The study concludes that semantic choices significantly enhance the clarity, emotional appeal, and persuasive power of Islamic sermons online. Finally, it contributes to the understanding of religious discourse in digital spaces and highlights the role of language in shaping belief and behaviour.
