Motherhood and Negligence in Jesmyn Ward: Sing, Unburied, Sing and Salvage the Bones

Abstract
This project delves into the portrayal of motherhood and negligence in the literary
works of Jesmyn Ward two novels, An acclaimed contemporary author. Through an
analysis of Ward’s novels, particularly Sing, Unburied, Sing And Salvage the bones,
this study investigates the complex relationships between mothers and their
children amidst challenging circumstances. Ward’s narratives vividly capture the
struggles of motherhood within marginalized communities, where poverty, racism,
and societal neglect amplify the burdens faced by mothers. Also in this work,
Feminist Theory is been used to examine how societal expectations and Gender
Norms influence the characters experiences. Critical Race Theory is also used in
approaching the systemic racism, racial inequalities, and prejudice perception of
maternal negligence particularly when viewed through a racialized lens. By
examining the themes of abandonment, emotional absence, and the quest for
redemption, this research sheds light on the profound impact of negligence on
maternal roles familial dynamics, moreover, it explores how ward’s empathetic
storytelling serves as a platform to confront societal issues and advocate for greater
awareness and compassion towards the struggles of motherhood in contemporary
America. Through a synthesis of literary analysis and social commentary, this
project contributes to a deeper understanding of the intersectionality of motherhood,
negligence, and social injustice in modern literature.
