Abstract
ABSTRACT This study examines the role of Generative Artificial Intelligence (AI) in enhancing research competence and academic preparedness among undergraduate students at the University of Ilorin, Nigeria. Employing a descriptive survey design, data were collected from 397 respondents using a structured questionnaire. Analysis via descriptive statistics revealed high awareness and frequent use of AI tools such as ChatGPT and Jasper for academic tasks. Findings indicate that AI positively influences students' ability to identify credible sources, synthesize literature, and structure research outputs, thereby boosting confidence and reducing academic stress. Ethical concerns, policy gaps, and uneven access emerged as critical challenges. The study concludes that, when integrated thoughtfully with clear institutional policies and AI literacy training, Generative AI can significantly support student learning and research. Recommendations are provided for university administrators, faculty, students, and policymakers to maximize benefits while safeguarding academic integrity.
