Abstract
This study examined the bacterial contamination present on shuttle bus door handles within Kaduna Polytechnic and evaluated the antibiotic susceptibility patterns of the isolated organisms. A total of twenty (20) swab samples were collected from door handles of buses operating within the campus. Samples were cultured on nutrient agar and selective media to isolate and identify bacteria using standard microbiological techniques. The isolates obtained included Staphylococcus aureus, Escherichia coli, Pseudomonas aeruginosa, and Klebsiella pneumoniae. Antibiotic susceptibility testing was performed using the Kirby–Bauer disc diffusion method on Mueller-Hinton agar. Results revealed that most isolates showed resistance to commonly used antibiotics such as ampicillin and tetracycline, while exhibiting higher sensitivity to ciprofloxacin and gentamicin. The findings highlight the public health risk associated with bacterial contamination on frequently touched surfaces and emphasize the need for regular sanitation and hand hygiene practices among shuttle users within the institution.
