Utilization of Palm Kernel Shell in Flexible Pavement for Sustainable Road Development

Abstract
This study investigates the use of Palm Kernel Shells (PKS), a common agricultural waste in Nigeria, as a partial replacement for coarse aggregates in flexible pavement construction. The research aims to promote sustainable, cost-effective, and environmentally friendly road development. Through laboratory tests such as Los Angeles Abrasion, Aggregate Impact, Marshall Stability, and chemical analysis using XRD and XRF, the performance of PKS in asphalt mixtures was evaluated. Results show that a 4% PKS replacement achieved the highest stability (15.70 kN), indicating enhanced strength and durability for medium-traffic roads. The findings confirm that PKS is lightweight, eco-friendly, and suitable for sustainable pavement applications.
