Abstract
ABSTRACT The effect of various concentration of aqueous extract of Gongronema Latifolium leaves on some liver function parameters; alanine and aspartate aminotransferase and alkaline phosphatase were investigated in albino Wister strain rats. The classes of chemical components of the aqueous extract of the plant were determined. Glycosides, alkaloids, carbohydrates, saponins, tannins, and flavonoids, were found to be present while cyanogenetic glycosides was not detected. The activities of aspartate aminotransferases increased for all concentration(p0.05)for all the concentrations administered. The results therefore, strongly suggest that Gongronema Latifolium leafextract may not have hepatotoxic effect when used as nutritional or therapeutic agent.
